Late Stallion Rally Clips Warhawks
The South County Stallions scored 8 runs in the last two innings to defeat the Madison Warhawks 12-8 in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament at Madison. After falling behind briefly early, the Warhawks took a big lead into the middle innings but were unable to hold on. Madison Senior Jesse Jeter started on the hill and got off to a tough start by walking the first two batters. Jeter came back to limit the damage, but the Stallions did push across 1 run on a SAC fly to right by pitcher Jesse Beal. Madison went down in order in the first and Jeter set the Stallions down easily in their half of the 2nd, two by strikeout (2 of his 9 for the game). Junior catcher Alex Jacquez beat out an infield hit to start the bottom of the 2nd for the Warhawks. Left fielder Andrew Schrock followed by drilling a 1-1 pitch over the right centerfield fence to put the Warhawks up 2-1. Senior DH Ted Williams then hit a liner to left for a single. David Fathalikhani put down a good SAC bunt and was safe at first on a high throw. Madison scored 3 more times with 2 outs on a series of wild pitches, passed balls, and an error and led 5-1 after 2 innings. The third and fourth innings went uneventfully for both teams, with Jeter and Beal settling in. South County scored 3 times in the top of the 5th to make it 5-4 on 4 consecutive hits to start the inning (single by Frazier, homer by Fitzgerald, single by Bartlett, and double by Beal). The Warhawks came back to score 1 and take a 6-4 lead going into the 6th when third baseman Casey Turner singled, moved to third on a hit and run single by shortstop Brig Tison and scored on a daring 2 out straight steal of home with Schrock at the plate. South County took the lead in the 6th on a 3 run homer by Brent Frazier and the Warhawks went down in order. South County led 7-6 after 6 innings. South County was able to extend its lead to 12-6 in the top of the 7th on a combination of walks and hits against Jeter and reliever Matt Zepp. The Warhawks tried to mount one final comeback and were able to plate 2 runs on a double by Alex Jacquez. Final score: South County 12 Madison 8. So ends the Warhawks 2008 season, which had several high points, including a second place at the Orlando National Classic, a big comeback extra inning win against Langley at home, and a big Senior Night win against Stone Bridge. A final salute to the Warhawk seniors for their 4 years of hard work, dedication, and leadership: Brian Minnick, Maxfield Brennan, Paul Gongaware, Kyle McIntyre, Brig Tison, Casey Turner, Gavin Scott, Brandon Lomax, Brian Foy, Andrew Schrock, Matt Zepp, David Fathalikhani, Ted Williams, Jesse Jeter, and Collin Flaherty. We wish you all the best. ^Stone Bridge Defeats Warhawks for Liberty District Crown
After splitting the season series at one game a piece, the Liberty District championship game promised to be a good game, but on a cool breezy night at Langley, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs applied the pressure to the Madison Warhawks early and often and won the District crown by a 10-0 score. Stone Bridge knocked out 13 hits and Madison did not play well defensively. The Warhawks stung the ball in the first two innings on several occasions, but had nothing to show for it, hitting the balls directly to Bulldog fielders. However, after the first out of the third inning, Bulldog Senior Ty Weaver took over, pitching a 1 hitter. Although the Warhawks consistently put the ball in play (1 strikeout), they did not consistently hit the ball well after the 2nd inning. With its second place finish in the Liberty District, they will host Patriot District 3rd place team South County in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament this Friday. ^Warhawks Outlast Saxons
On an unusually cold Friday night at Madison, the Warhawks defeated the Langley Saxons 4-3 in the semi-finals of the Liberty District Tournament, setting the stage for a Liberty District Madison v. Stone Bridge final for the third straight year. Senior Jesse Jeter pitched a complete game without yielding any earned runs, giving up 4 hits while striking out five. Junior Alex Jacquez drove in a pair of runs and Seniors Casey Turner and Brig Tison both had 2 hits, including a double, and scored a run. Langley went down in order in the first inning, with Jeter only needing 4 pitches. Madison got a two out single from Brig Tison. After Alex Jacquez got on base on an infield error, Tison was just nipped at third trying to get there from first after the ball got away. Langley catcher Jeremy Mahn led off the top of the 2nd with a single to left. After a pop to centerfield, the courtesy runner for Mahn was picked off first on a quick move by Jeter. Joey Zarella then hit a liner back to the box that was deflected by Jeter and picked up by Turner who gunned it to first to get Zarella by a half of a step. The Warhawks plated 2 runs in their half of the 2nd against Saxon Junior righty Barrett Hunter. Senior Andrew Schrock singled and moved to 2nd on a passed ball. With one out, Junior Ricardo Perez dropped a single into right to score Schrock and went all the way to third when the throw to home got away. Senior David Fathalikhani singled in Perez to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead. Langley got an unearned run back in the third on a leadoff walk to Chris Sievers, a stolen base and an outfield error. The Warhawks stretched their lead to 4-1 in their half of the third. Turner singled to left and Tison doubled down the line. Alex Jacquez scored them both with a single to right. Jeter set the Saxons down in order in the 4th. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th, Senior Kyle McIntyre singled and Turner doubled to right center, but McIntyre had to hold at third. Jody Davis came in for Hunter and was able to squelch the rally by getting a first pitch groundout. In the Langley 5th, Chris Sievers led off with a single, but was erased on a Tison to Ehrsam to Fathalikhani double play. Clay Rainie then hit a hot smash between short and third and Turner made a diving stop. His hurried throw was a little high and pulled Fathalikhani off the bag. With 2 strikes, Daniel Bergamesca then got a hold of a high fastball and sent a long shot over the right centerfield fence to make the score 4-3. Jeter and Davis set their respective opponents down in order, in the 6th, setting the stage for Langley’s last chance in the top of the 7th. With 1 out, an infield error put Chris Sievers on 1st. Jeter then recorded the 2nd out by strikeout. Clay Rainie then doubled to left, but the quick relay held Sievers at third. Jeter then struck out Bergamesca on a 2-2 slider for the final out. ^Warhawks Bite Bulldogs
Madison defeated Stone Bridge 6-3 on Thursday evening at Madison, with the game being moved up a day due to the forecast for bad weather the next few days. It was Senior Night at Madison, with 13 Warhawk Seniors being honored before their final regular season game: Brian Minnick, Paul Gongaware, Kyle McIntyre, Brig Tison, Casey Turner, Gavin Scott, Brandon Lomax, Andrew Schrock, Matt Zepp, David Fathalikhani, Ted Williams, Jesse Jeter, and Collin Flaherty. The Seniors made big contributions to the Madison victory that vaulted the Warhawks into 2nd place going into the Liberty District Tournament. Matt Zepp got the ball and pitched 4 great innings, giving up 1 run and struck out 8. Andrew Schrock pitched 2 innings and got the hold. Jesse Jeter got the save, striking out the side in the 7th. In all, Warhawk pitchers struck out 13 Bulldogs (23 in 2 games against SB). Seniors Kyle McIntyre and Casey Turner had 2 hits each for the Warhawks and Junior catcher Alex Jacquez had a huge 2 run homer to center in the 1st inning. In the top of the 1st, Zepp struck out Brian Wheaton and gave up a single to Michael Prince. After striking out Johnny Bladel, and with Prince running on the pitch, shortstop Mike Stancik hit a soft liner down the right field line that scored Prince. In the bottom of the 1st, with one out Casey Turner stayed down on a tough 2 strike curveball from Nick Fialdini and singled to right. With 2 outs, Alex Jacquez drove a 2 strike fastball over the right centerfield fence to give the Warhawks a 2-1 lead after one inning. In the top of the 2nd, the Bulldogs got a leadoff single from Collin Pearson, but Zepp came back to strike out the next 3 hitters. The Warhawks got a 2 out walk from Sophomore TJ Ehrsam, followed by a single from Kyle McIntyre, but could not score. Zepp set down the Bulldogs in order in the 3rd. Brig Tison got things going for Madison in the 3rd with a leadoff walk and stole second. Andrew Schrock got him home with a single to center. Ted Williams was hit by a pitch. Schrock moved up to third on an attempted pickoff throw that went into centerfield and scored on a wild pitch. 4-1 Madison after 3 innings. With one out in the top of the 4th, Patrick Thompson reached on an infield error. Collin Pearson singled to right and JJ White loaded the bases on an infield hit. After Russ blocked the wood knocker, Zepp came back to get bases loaded strikeouts for the 2nd and third outs. With one out in the bottom of the 4th, Kyle McIntyre singled and moved to 2nd on a balk. Casey Turner then unloaded a double to left center to score McIntyre. Turner scored on a single by Brig Tison. Senior Andrew Schrock came in the pitch the 5th for the Warhawks and got 2 quick outs. After Johnny Bladel worked a walk and Stancik singled, Schrock struck out Thompson to end the inning. The Warhawks couldn’t do anything after a 1 out Cam Cassady single in the 5th. The Bulldogs got a couple of runs in the 6th on a leadoff single from Pearson, a HBP and a couple tough to handle groundballs. Schrock then struck out Bladel, who was the tying run at the plate. The Warhawks went down in order in the 6th. Senior Jesse Jeter came in and earned the save by striking out the side around a 1 out walk. Coach Gjormand was very pleased with the Warhawks performance. “Matt came out and pitched big. We showed perseverance and got it done. This is a great way to finish the regular season.” ^Seahawks Topple Warhawks
The South Lakes Seahawks put a damper on Madison’s drive for a bye in the District playoffs by defeating the Warhawks 7-2 on Tuesday evening. In the top of the first, Senior center fielder Kyle McIntyre reached on an infield error, but was gunned down trying to steal by Seahawk catcher Scott Reed and the Warhawks could not get another base runner against South Lakes hurler Paul Kirchner. Senior Ted Williams took the hill for the Warhawks and was greeted by a Noah Sweet leadoff single. Andrew Thomas-Calvo then hit a high hopper to the left side that got through the hole for a hit. The runners each moved up on a wild pitch and again moved up on a passed ball with Sweet scoring. Scott Reed walked and moved to second on a SAC bunt with Thomas-Calvo holding at third. Williams then got the 2nd out by strikeout. With 2 outs, Wilfredo Corps-Ortiz put the Seahawks ahead 3-0 with a groundball single to right. In the top of the second, Senior Andrew Schrock worked a walk and Williams singled up the middle. Junior Ricardo Perez moved both runners up with a SAC bunt and Senior David Fathalikhani drove Schrock home with a SAC fly to right. The half inning ended with the Warhawks trailing 3-1. Williams appeared to be sailing in the 2nd with a strikeout of the first 2 batters, but Noah Sweet then got on base on a bloop to center that fell just out of McIntyre’s diving reach. Sweet appeared to be thrown out stealing by catcher Alex Jacquez, but a hard slide jarred the ball loose. Successive singles by Thomas-Calvo and Reed scored a run and the inning ended with South Lakes leading 4-1. The Warhawks got back to 4-2 in the third after a Kyle McIntyre one out single and an Alex Jacquez 2 out double off the base of the wall in right center. Jesse Jeter took over on the mound for the Warhawks in the third and retired the side in order. Jeter was hit by a pitch leading off the 4th. With 2 outs, Senior third baseman Casey Turner launched a long fly to center that Noah Sweet caught on a dead run in front of the 405 sign. The Seahawks added a run in the bottom of the 4th on a walk, a balk and a push bunt single put runners on the corners with no outs. Jeter then picked the runner off of first, but the runner scored from third during the ensuing rundown. The Warhawks had runners at the corners with one out in the 5th on a TJ Ehrsam single and a Brig Tison single. However, with Tison running on the pitch, he was unable to get back to first after a pop to short. The Seahawks increased their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the 5th, when Scott Reed leadoff with a triple to center and scored on a single by Jon Baamonde. Three walks in the inning scored Baamonde from third. The Warhawks got nothing going in the 6th or 7th innings other than an Andrew Schrock line single to center in the 6th and ultimately fell 7-2. ^Warhawks Late Rally Nips Saxons
The Madison Warhawks and the Langley Saxons hooked up in a classic battle on Friday night before a large crowd at Madison. The Warhawks used a 7th inning rally to tie the game and then won it in the 9th by a 5-4 margin. This was an extremely well played game by both teams and included good pitching, timely hitting and solid fielding. Senior righty Jesse Jeter got the win after 2 perfect innings in the extra frames. Senior Andrew Schrock pitched the first 7 for Madison, struck out 9 and kept the Warhawks close until the bats got going. Junior catcher Alex Jacquez completed a 3 run bottom of the 7th rally by hitting a 2 out 2-RBI single to tie the game at 4. Sophomore TJ Ehrsam got the winning single in the 9th after Senior 3rd baseman Casey Turner had led off the 9th with a booming triple to left center. Andrew Schrock came out firing for the Warhawks and set down the Saxons in the first. Senior Kyle McIntyre singled on the first pitch offered to him by Junior Barret Hunter, but was stranded at 2nd after getting there on a SAC bunt by Senior SS Brig Tison. The Saons struck for 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd on an Eddie Gonzalez single and a long homer to left by Junior catcher Jeremy Mahn. Schrock came back to strike out the next 2 hitters, and struck out 3 in the 3rd inning. The Warhawks managed a David Fathalikhani single in the 2nd and a couple base runners in the 3rd, but could not get the big hit. Lanley led 2-0 after 3 innings. Schrock was sailing along with 2 outs in the 4th when DH Joey Zarella homered on a fastball to right centerfield. Madison went down in order in the 4th. Langley plated another run in the 5th on a Clay Rainie leadoff double and a Daniel Bergamesca single. Madison got a one out single from Casey Turner, but he could not advance passed second. Langley did not threaten in the top of the 6th and Madison picked up a single run on a Brig Tison single, a wild pitch, and a RBI single up the middle by Schrock. 4-1 Langley after 6 innings. Schrock continued to battle and set the Saxons down in order in the 7th to set the stage for the Warhawk comeback. The Warhawks caught the break they needed to open the inning when David Fathalikhani’s fly to short center was lost in the lights. Fathalikhani never broke stride and hustled to 2nd. He scored on a single to center by Casey Turner and Turner moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. Kyle McIntyre hit a one out hard grounder that pitcher Hunter got a glove on and the ball was fielded by 2nd baseman Bergamesca right next to the bag. Bergamesca had no play at first on the speedy McIntyre and no force at 2nd with Turner moving to third. Senior Jody Davis was called upon in relief and he was able to get the 2nd out on a strikeout, with McIntyre stealing 2nd on the strikeout. With 2 outs and the Warhawks down 4-2, Alex Jacquez drove the first pitch he saw to left, with Turner and McIntyre scoring easily to tie the game. In the top of the 8th of the 4-4 game, Senior Jesse Jeter came in to relieve Schrock, who moved to left after an outstanding effort against the mighty Saxons. Jeter and the Warhawks were pumped up and Jeter got the Saxons in order, including 2 strikeouts in the heart of the Saxon order, but Davis also got the Warhawks in order. In the top of the 9th, Jeter got the Saxons on 2 groundouts and a strikeout. In the bottom of the 9th, Senior Casey Turner stroked a 2 strike gapper to left center. Turner approached 2nd at full speed and 3rd base coach Justin Counts, knowing the ball had rolled to the longest part of the park, waved him to third. Turner slid in and easily beat the throw. With the Saxon infield drawn in, Sophomore TJ Ehram hit a hard groundball in between the 1st and 2nd baseman, scoring Turner with the winning run from third. “I am so proud of these players,” said Madison Coach Pudge Gjormand. “This was a great team win. This is a big win for the District standings. These guys know they have to battle and play start to finish.” ^Warhawks Blank Jefferson
The Madison Warhawks defeated the Jefferson Colonials on a cool night at Jefferson. Senior lefty Ted Williams picked up the win, throwing 1-hit ball for four innings, while striking out 3. Senior Gavin Scott pitched 2 innings and Junior Gavin Hilburn pitched 1 inning to complete the shutout. The offense was led by Senior first baseman David Fathalikhani (2 for 2, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Ted Williams (2 for 3, 2 RBI), Senior left fielder Andrew Schrock (2 for 3, 2 runs, 1 RBI), and Junior DH Ricardo Perez (2 for 3, 1 RBI). The Warhawks also played errorless defense. The Warhawks went down in order in the first. The Colonials looked to have something going in their half of the first with a leadoff single, a walk and a wild pitch moving runners to 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Williams bore down to get 2 comebackers to the mound and a strikeout of 3rd baseman Mason Freedman to end the threat with no runs. Madison picked up 2 runs in the 2nd. Perez reached by hustling to first on a ball mishandled in the infield. With one out, Williams hammered a single to center. Fathalikhani walked to load the bases. Senior third baseman Casey Turner lofted a Sac fly to center that was ultimately dropped to keep the bases loaded and put Madison up 1-0. Sophomore 2nd baseman TJ Ehrsam then did the job with a SAC fly to left. Williams set the Colonials down in order with a strikeout and the Warhawks were up 2-0 after 2 innings. Senior shortstop Brig Tison got things going for Madison in the 3rd with s leadoff double to the right centerfield gap. Perez scored Tison with a single to left. Schrock singled to left. Williams singled to center to score Perez. Fathalikhani doubled to left center to score Schrock. Williams again set the Colonials down in order and it was 5-0 Warhawks after 3. In the 4th, Tison led off with a walk and stole second. With 1 out, Perez singled to left and Tison held at third. Perez stole second. Schrock singled in Tison with a single to left. Williams knocked in Perez with a groundout to 2nd. Schrock scored on another double to left center by Fathalikhani and Turner completed the scoring by doubling to right center to plate Fathalikhani. In the Colonials 4th, Williams got the first 2 batters on flies to the outfield, hit Freedman with a pitch, and ended his evening on the mound with a strikeout. The 5th through 7th innings saw no further hits by the Warharks, but several reserves got valuable at bats, working a couple walks and hitting several balls hard. Senior righty Gavin Scott pitched a scoreless 5th and 6th, giving up 1 hit. Junior righty Gavin Hilburn finished the game, giving up 1 hit and getting a strikeout on a beautiful straight change up. Coach Gjormand was pleased with the victory and said, “It gave us some confidence when Teddy was able to keep them from scoring in the first when they had base runners. We settled in from there on the mound and started to get some good at bats. It was nice to get some of the other guys some playing time tonight. We’ve got a tough one coming on Friday.” ^Warhawks Bats Get Hot
The Madison Warhawks turned the tables on the W.T. Woodson Cavaliers and charged to a late comeback victory on Friday night, much like Woodson had done to them about a month ago. Senior Matt Zepp got the win in the 11-5 Madison victory, striking out 4 batters in an inning and a third in relief of starter Jesse Jeter. Jeter left with two outs in the 6th after re-injuring his ankle having given up 4 earned runs on 7 hits with 7 strikeouts. The Madison bats finally got hot, with 10 hits and at least a half a dozen line drives hit directly to Cavalier fielders. The Madison offense was led by Seniors Ted Williams (2 hits, 3 RBI), Kyle McIntyre (2 hits, 2 runs), Andrew Schrock (2 hits, double, 1 RBI), Casey Turner (2 hits, double, 1 RBI), and Junior Alex Jacquez (2 for 2, 2 runs, double, 1 RBI). Senior righty Jesse Jeter got through an easy top of the 1st, giving up a single and getting 2 strikeouts. Madison hit 2 balls right on the nose and had nothing to show for it off of Cavalier Senior righty Greg Whitaker. Kyle McIntyre smoked a low line drive that looked to be headed to the right field corner, but it was somehow corralled on 1 hop by 1st baseman Jack Quinn. Brig Tison then sent a liner to shortstop Jacob Morley. Woodson put 2 runs on the board in the top of the second. Bobby McCloud led off with a double to left center. Wyatt Moore and Brendan Breslin hit consecutive singles to left and Dylan Robeson got a bunt single to score the second run. Jeter averted further damage by striking out Max Waizenegger and Morley with 2 runners on. Madison came back to get a run back in their half of the 3rd after a leadoff double to right by Junior catcher Alex Jacquez and an RBI single to left by Senior DH Ted Williams. Jeter set the Cavs down in order in the 3rd and the Warhawks got 3 in their half of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Sophomore 2nd baseman TJ Ehrsam got things going with a lead off walk. Kyle McIntyre singled and went to second when the Cavs tried to get Ehrsam, who had hustled to third. The ball wound up in the Madison dugout and allowed Ehrsam to score. Brig Tison then hit a liner to left that would have scored McIntyre from 3rd anyway, but the ball was dropped. Tison wound up on 2nd and scored on a Jacquez single. An infield error started things for the Cavs in the 4th. With one out, a walk gave the Cavs runners on first and second, but an apparent missed sign had only the runner on second trying to steal and he was easily thrown out by Jacquez throwing to Senior Casey Turner at third. After a walk moved the runners up, Jeter ended the inning by getting lead off man Waizenegger on strikes. Madison had a chance to possibly put the Cavs away in the bottom of the inning, but aggressive base running came back to haunt the Warhawks. Andrew Schrock led off with a double to right center. Casey Turner then put down a perfect push bunt single to put runners on the corners. TJ Ehrsam put down a bunt and moved Turner to second, but Schrock was thrown out at the plate. Kyle McIntyre put down a beautiful bunt single, but relief pitcher Joey Carleton faked to first and threw behind Turner at third for the 2nd out. Tison then hit another line drive, again to Morley at short for the 3rd out. Woodson took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 5th, scoring 3 times on 2 walks, an HBP, an infield error and 2 hits. The inning ended on a single to left by Breslin and Schrock throwing a one-hopper to Jacquez who applied the tag on Wyatt Moore. Madison got nothing going in the 5th and the game went to the 6th with Woodson ahead 5-4. Jeter retired the first 2 hitters in the 6th, but had to leave the game after twisting his ankle. Senior Matt Zepp came on and finished the inning with a strikeout. In the Warhawk half of the 6th, third baseman Casey Turner turned on a Carleton fastball and doubled down the left field line. In the biggest play of the game, Carleton got Ehrsam swinging on a curveball in the dirt, but the ball went to the backstop and Ehrsam scampered to 1st. Turner went hard to third and tried to score when Breslin had difficulty locating the ball. Turner beat the throw to the plate and Carleton was injured trying to apply the tag. The tying run had scored, and Ehrsam, who never broke stride, wound up on third. McIntyre worked a walk against reliever Matthew Coleman. Ehrsam scored the go ahead run on an infield error on a ball hit by Tison. Madison went ahead 7-5 on a bases loaded walk to Matt Zepp. Ted Williams broke the game open on a 2 out, 2 RBI single up the middle to make it 9-5. Schrock singled in another run and the 7th run of the inning scored on an error. Matt Zepp came back out for the 7th for the Warhawks and pounded the strike zone, striking out the side. Coach Gjormand commented after the game that he was very proud of the team, as they had responded to some adversity the past week or so with some positive energy. “We had been pressing a little bit and needed a spark. Every game in the District this year is a tough one. Jesse battled today and Matt came in when we needed him and he was outstanding. We really had some great at bats tonight.” ^Warhawks Fall to Highlanders
The Madison Warhawks faced off against the McLean Highlanders on Wednesday night, trying to break their first two game losing streak of the season. The result was a hard fought 3-1 loss to the Highlanders. Andrew Schrock pitched well for the Warhawks in defeat, giving up 3 runs on only 1 hit with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts in his 6 innings of work. For the third straight game, Madison had trouble putting hits together to score runs. In the top of the first, Senior SS Brig Tison worked a 1 out walk and stole second, but was left stranded after successive strikeouts by Sophomore righty Dennis Buckley, who would strike out 10 Warhawks in the process of his complete game victory. Schrock came out throwing hard, but couldn’t locate to the first two batters, who were issued walks. An infield throwing error on a double play chance, an infield single by Erik Payne and a first & third double steal plated 2 runs and staked the Highlanders to a 2-0 lead after 1 inning. Madison and McLean went down fairly easily in the 2nd and 3rd innings, the batting highlight of those 2 innings for Madison being a sharp line drive single to right by Sophomore 2nd baseman TJ Ehrsam, who later scored on an infield error. Madison also had a nice Casey Turner to Ehrsam to Ricardo Perez around the horn double play in the third. McLean led 2-1 after 3 innings. Madison had a great chance to tie or take the lead in the 4th, when Ricardo Perez singled and Junior catcher Alex Jacquez walked. They moved up to 2nd and 3rd with one out and the Highlanders brought the infield in. Buckley bore down and struck out the next two Madison hitters to keep the lead. Madison went down in order in the 5th and 6th. McLean added a run in the 5th to take a 3-1 lead on a walk, 2 HBPs and a wild pitch. In the 6th, McLean looked to add to their lead when they got a runner to third with one out. Andrew Schrock kept the game close by getting two big called third strikes on the next 2 McLean hitters, but the Warhawks could not break through in the 7th and lost 3-1. The Warhawks look to bounce back on Friday when they host Liberty District foe W.T. Woodson. ^Marshall Downs Warhawks
The Marshall Statesman got good pitching and defense and took advantage of numerous Warhawk errors in downing Madison 11-1 in five innings under a full moon at Madison Friday night. Senior Jesse Jeter started on the mound for Madison and looked like he had recovered from the sprained ankle he suffered at Langley a week before, but the constant pressure on his plant foot and ankle would take a toll as time went by. In the top of the 1st, Jeter forced 2 weak come-backers to the mound and got a strikeout. Kyle McIntyre started the Madison half of the 1st with a single to right, but a force out and 2 pop ups ended any threat. Marshall opened the 2nd with a single by Tom Pecheco, a sacrifice bunt fielder’s choice where no out was recorded, and a HBP to load the bases. Alex Vanderhye singled to score a run and pitcher Greg Goldsmith hit a SAC fly to right to score another. With first and third, Jeter went to first on a pick off move, but the rundown resulted in a wild throw to home for another run. In the inning, there were 2 more infield errors and a dropped ball after a tag on a run down. When the smoke cleared, Marshall had scored 6 runs on only 2 hits. In the Warhawk half of the inning, Andrew Schrock singled, moved to 2nd on a ground ball and scored on a two out David Fathalikhani RBI single. Marshall scored another 3 runs in the top of the third on a hit by pitch and singles by Daniel Blakely, Greg Goldsmith and Kevin Nutter. Madison got another lead off single by McIntyre, but he could not advance and it was 9-1 Marshall after 3. Senior lefty Ted Williams came on for Jeter to start the 4th and struck out the first batter. Pecheco then singled to right (his 4th hit against Madison in 2 games) and stole 2nd. Pacheco moved to third on a ground out to short. With two outs and a man on third, Williams hit successive batters to load the bases. Goldsmith then hit a liner back to the box that Williams knocked down and threw to first for the final out. Madison’s lone hit in the 4th was a two out single by Junior left fielder Ricardo Perez. In the top of the 5th, Williams had to exit after 2 pitches when he could not continue having injured his throwing hand on the line drive he knocked down the inning before. Junior Gavin Hilburn was forced to come on a try to loosen in a hurry. A couple walks, a hit by pitch and another Madison error, resulted in 2 more Marshall runs without the benefit of a base hit. Marshall now led 11-1. McIntyre walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th, but could not score to prolong the game. Final score: Marshall 11 Madison 1. Madison travels to Liberty District rival McLean on Tuesday. ^Bulldogs Outlast Warhawks
The Stone Bridge Bulldogs held on to win a close game on their home field, defeating the Madison Warhawks 2-1. Senior Andrew Schrock pitched extremely well in a losing effort, notching 10 strikeouts and only 2 first inning runs. Several Warhawk hitters put the ball in play hard, but they were unable to string hits together. Things looked promising at the beginning for the Warhawks. Kyle McIntyre was hit by a pitch and Casey Turner singled hard up the middle. Brig Tison then hit a laser that was corralled by 2nd baseman Collin Pearson, who then doubled McIntyre off of second. DH Ted Williams then grounded to the first base hole and beat the throw with the pitcher covering. The ball got away and Turner took third and headed for home, but was cut down at the plate for the third out. Stone Bridge plated both of their runs in the first inning. Center fielder Matt Irwin singled to left with one out. Left fielder Johnny Bladel stroked a double to right center to plate Irwin. SS Mike Stancik walked and Bladel scored on a groundout by catcher Brian Wheaton. Alex Jacquez singled to lead off the second, but was stranded there. Schrock blew away 3 Bulldogs in the 2nd, striking out 2 swinging and 1 looking. In the third, Kyle McIntyre worked a one out walk, but could not advance. Schrock got the Bulldogs 3 up, 3 down again, with 2 grounders to Brig Tison and a strikeout. Jacquez was hit by a pitch with one out in the 4th, but was erased on a 2 out force play when SS Stancik dove to get to Ricardo Perez’s grounder and flipped to 2nd. The Bulldogs threatened in the 4th on a 1 out single by Patrick Thompson and a 2 out single to right by JJ White. Thomson beat the throw to third and White moved up to 2nd on the throw. Schrock reared back and struck out lead off batter Michael Prince on 3 pitches to end the threat. In the 5th, 1st baseman David Fathalikhani walked to lead off the inning, but was forced at 2nd on another diving stab by Stancik. Kyle McIntyre then jumped on a Ty Weaver fastball and hit a bullet to right, but it was right at Price, who caught it for the 2nd out. Stone Bridge threatened in the 5th, getting a walk, a double, and a walk to load the bases. Tyler Basso then hit a slow roller between the mound and 1st that looked like it would score a run, but David Fathalikhani charged in from 1st and quickly threw home to Jacquez for the force. Schrock then struck out Thompson to end the threat. Madison got on the board in the 6th. Brig Tison singled and stole 2nd. He moved to third on a balk. With one out, Jacquez grounded out to short, scoring Tison. Schrock then singled to right, but the inning ended on Weaver’s 2nd strikeout of a Warhawk hitter in the game. In the bottom of the 6th, Pearson hit Schrock’s first offering to the right field gap for a triple. Schrock took care of matters to keep the Warhawks close by striking out White, Prince and Irwin in succession. In the 7th, Matt Zepp hit a one out single to left, and wisely held at first as Bladel ran down the ball before it went to the corner in left and made a good throw to second. Senior Mike Palmer relieved Weaver and was able to keep the Warhawks at bay by getting a fly ball and a strikeout to end the game. The Warhawks start the 2nd half of their Liberty District season Friday when they host the Marshall Statesmen. ^Madison Grounds Seahawks
The Madison Warhawks defeated the South Lakes Seahawks on a chilly Monday evening contest at Madison. Senior Ted Williams ran his season record to 3-1 by going 6 plus innings, giving up 5 hits and also striking out 5. Junior Alex Jacquez led the offense by going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. Seniors Kyle McIntyre, Andrew Schrock and Williams each added 2 hits and an RBI and Senior David Fathalikhani and Junior Ricardo Perez added 2 RBI each. Williams set the Seahawks down in order in the first. Kyle McIntyre led off for Madison, as he has done several times this season, with a hard single. Casey Turner sacrificed him to second and McIntyre stole third, but he was left stranded there. South Lakes put runners on the corners with 2 outs on a single and a walk, but the Seahawks tried to send the trail runner on a first and third steal and Alex Jacquez gunned the runner out at second for the third out. The Warhawks put 4 big runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd. Alex Jacquez got on via an infield error, Andrew Schrock singled, and Junior DH Ricardo Perez put down a good sacrifice bunt and reached when no one covered first. David Fathalikhani and Ted Williams then added hard singles to center to plate the first 3 Warhawk runs. Casey Turner drove in the 4th run of the inning with a SAC fly to right. Williams set down the Seahawks in order in the 3rd, needing only 7 pitches. The Warhawks put another run on the board in the third. Collin Flaherty reached on an error. Alex Jacquez and Andrew Schrock singled to get Flaherty home, but that was the end of the Warhawk rally. Madison led 5-0 after 3 innings. The Seahawks came back to get 2 runs in the top of the 4th on 3 consecutive singles. Williams came back with 2 runners on to pick a runner off second base on a timing play called by Senior shortstop Brig Tison; and 2 strikeouts. Madison went down in order in their half of the 4th. Williams set the Seahawks down in order in the 5th, the last 2 by strikeout. Madison put the game out of reach in their half of the 5th, scoring 4 more times for a 9-2 advantage. Tison led things off with a double down the left field line and TJ Ehrsham walked. Alex Jacquez singled in a run and with one out, Ricardo Perez knocked in two with a double. Ted Williams prolonged the inning with a single to center and Kyle McIntyre plated the 4th run of the inning with a single to right. The Seahawks picked up a run in the 6th on a walk, a hit batsman, and a 2 out single over the first base bag. Madison scored one back in their half of the 6th on a Tison walk, a single to right by Senior Brandon Lomax, and an RBI single to left center by Jacquez. Williams started the 7th, but was unable to retire a batter, giving up two full count walks. Senior Matt Zepp came in from left field and struck out the first batter he faced. Four year varsity starter Noah Sweet then loaded the bases for the Seahawks with a single to left. The Seahawks scored their 4th run of the night on a bases loaded walk. Zepp then induced catcher Scott Reed, another 4 year starter for the Seahawks, to tap back to the box. Zepp threw to first for the out and the game ended when the runner on third failed to run on the force play and was tagged out by Jacquez when 2 runners wound up on third. Coach Gjormand indicated after the game that he thought the team was finding their groove at the plate, but did make a couple mistakes during the game. “Teddy pitched well and did a good job adjusting to the zone that was being called. He also had a good night at the plate, as did Alex. K-Mac has been setting the table for us. We need to get ready for a tough one on Wednesday.” ^Warhawks Soar Over Langley
The Madison Warhawks traveled to Langley on Friday night in a key Liberty District match up. Senior right-hander Jesse Jeter pitched a magnificent 2 hit, 6 inning shutout, striking out 13 Saxons. The offense was led by Juniors Ricardo Perez (3 for 3, 3 RBI), and Alex Jacquez (2 for 4, 2 doubles, 3 RBI), as well as Seniors Kyle McIntyre, Casey Turner, and Andrew Schrock who each collecting 2 hits. Senior Collin Flaherty smacked a 2 run homer to center in the 6th. The Warhawks also played their best defensive game of the season. The Warhawks jumped on Langley immediately. K-Mac started out with a hard smash off of pitcher Joey Zarella and into right field for a single. With the lefty Zarella falling off slightly towards third base, Casey Turner pushed a perfect bunt in between the mound and first base for a single. Brig Tison then worked a walk to load the bases. With one out, Alex Jacquez laced a line drive into the left field corner for a bases clearing double. Courtesy runner Joe Maloney stole third and came home on a 2 out RBI line single to right by Perez. Langley lead off batter Daniel Bergamesca worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch and stole second. Jeter struck out Graham Dubow, but then catcher Jeremy Mahn’s comebacker went off Jeter’s glove for an infield hit, putting runners at first and third. In what looked to be a big play at the time, Eddie Gonzalez hit a hard smash to Andrew Schrock at third. With Bergamesca running on contact, Schrock fired home to Jacquez in plenty of time to get Bergamesca. After 1 inning, Madison led 4-0. In the top of the 2nd, Matt Zepp hit a roller to short. Trying to make a play to give his team a spark, shortstop Jack McLindon charged and made an off-balance throw to first that got by and Zepp hustled all the way to third. With one out, Casey Turner hit a hard groundball passed the drawn in infield for an RBI single. Langley put a runner on by way of a walk in their half of the 2nd, but Jeter sandwiched a groundball force out play from first baseman David Fathalikhani around 2 strikeouts to get out of the inning. Madison was able to force Zarella from the game in the third after a double off the right centerfield wall by Jacquez, a beautiful bunt single by Schrock, and a 2 RBI line double to right center by Perez. Junior right Pete White came on for the Saxons and was able to get out of the inning, yielding only a single to Kyle McIntyre. Jeter set down the Saxons again in the third with 2 strikeouts. Jeremy Mahn got his second of Langley’s only 2 hits with a hard ground ball down the left field line that Matt Zepp hustled to run down to hold Mahn to a single. 7-0 Madison after 3 innings. Madison took their only open inning in the 4th when Brig Tison doubled to left, but was picked off and tagged just before getting to third. Jeter was on fire by then, striking out 3 Langley batters on 9 straight strikes. Schrock led off the Madison 5th with a hard single to right. He went to third on a single to left by Perez, his third hit of the game. After Perez was thrown out trying to steal second, Senior Ted Williams stroked a line drive to left, driving in Schrock from third to make it 8-0. Jeter made fast work of the Saxons in their half of the 5th, getting the first 2 batters on 2 pitches, and striking out the third. In the top of the 6th, Tison worked a 1 out walk and Flaherty then lofted a 3-2 pitch high and long to center, his second homer in the last 3 games, putting Madison ahead 10-0. Jeter finished the game by turning in the rare trick of striking out 4 batters in one inning. A pleased Coach Gjormand said after the game, “This was our best game of the year. We just beat a really good team. We put it all together on the mound, with the bat and in the field. Jesse was great. We had a really good approach at the plate tonight.” ^Warhawks Bounce Back in Win Over Colonials
The Madison Warhawks bounced back from last night’s tough loss to Woodson with a solid 11-5 victory over the visiting Jefferson Colonials. Junior righty Gavin Hilburn picked up his first varsity win, pitching 5 innings. Senior Matt Zepp pitched the last 2 innings, giving up only one slow roller single, while striking out two. The Madison offense was led by Senior shortstop Brig Tison, who drove in 2 runs and scored 3, and Matt Zepp who homered, doubled and drove in four. In the top of the first, Hilburn braved the cold evening in short sleeves and made short work of the top of the Colonials order, surrendering a lone single. The fireworks started immediately for the Warhawks in their half of the 1st, when sophomore lefty Kyle Gaader’s first pitch hit Kyle McIntyre. McIntyre stole 2nd and 3rd and came home on an RBI fielder’s choice in which Brig Tison reached safely at first. Tison scored on a single by Junior catcher Alex Jacquez, who then was plated by a single to left by Junior DH Ricardo Perez. The Colonials came back to score 2 runs in the top of the 2nd on a walk and 2 singles. Madison got those 2 runs back in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 5-2 lead. Kyle McIntyre started the inning with a perfectly placed bunt and scored on a triple into the right field corner by Brig Tison. Jacquez then drove in Tison when his grounder to short, which would have scored Tison in any event, was mishandled. In the top of the third, an infield error, a failed pickoff attempt, and a passed ball put leadoff batter Jon Wildes on third base, but he was left stranded there after two short fly ball outs and a come backer to the mound. Madison put 3 more on the board in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Matt Zepp stroked a 1 out homer off the batting cage in left. Casey Turner singled, stole second and scored on an infield error. Senior Collin Flaherty then drove in the final run of the inning on a gapper triple to left center. Hilburn turned a 3 up and down top of the 4th when a lead off single was erased by a nice around the horn 5-4-3 double play…Schrock to Turner to Fathalikhani, followed by a groundout. The Warhawks put one the board in the 4th when Matt Zepp hit a laser SAC fly to left that was tracked down nicely by the left fielder, but had no play on the tagging Perez, who was able to trot home from third. The never say die Colonials put a 3 Spot on the board in the 5th against Hilburn, who was beginning to tire after fighting the cold mist and the long half innings while the Warhawks were batting. Hilburn reared back and struck out the final batter he faced to strand a runner at 2nd and keep the Warhawks with a 4 run cushion. The Warhawks suffered their only open frame in their half of the 5th, going down in order. Matt Zepp took the hill for Madison in the top of the 6th, getting the first 2 hitters on come backers to the mound. After an infield error, Zepp struck out the final batter of the inning. Madison scored their final 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th when Andrew Schrock and David Fathalikhani waked and were driven in by Zepp’s third long shot of the day to left, a 2 RBI double. Zepp then went back to the mound and after giving up a leadoff dribbler single, induced another around the horn groundball double play, Schrock to Turner, to Fathalikhani. Zepp then put the exclamation point on his evening by striking out the final batter. All Coach Gjormand could do after the game was smile and say, “That was a lot more fun than last night.” The Warhawks play their third Liberty District game of the week when they host the talented Langley Saxons on Friday night. ^Warhawks Drop Tough One to Woodson
The Madison Warhawks traveled to Woodson on a rare Monday night game to make up Friday’s rainout. Solo homers by Kyle McIntyre and Collin Flaherty and a solid pitching outing by Ted Williams went for naught as the Cavaliers plated 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th (2 unearned) and nipped the Warhawks in a 3-2 comeback victory. The game started hot for the Warhawks on this cold, wet evening when Kyle McIntyre jumped on the 2nd pitch of the game from Joe Carlton and deposited the ball over the right field fence for a 1-0 Madison lead. Senior lefty Ted Williams took the hill for the Warhawks and walked the leadoff batter on a 3-2 count. The runner was SAC bunted to second. With two outs, catcher Alex Jacquez blocked a low pitch and gunned out the runner trying to advance to third. Madison went down in order in the 2nd, and Williams turned the same table in the bottom half, eliminating 2 of the Cavaliers by strikeout. A one out walk and stolen base by Casey Turner was all the Warhawks could muster in the top of the 3rd. After an infield error to lead off the bottom of the third, Williams struck out the next two batters. With 2 outs and a man on first, lead off batter Kirk Lewis got the Cavaliers first hit by singling to right. Wyatt Moore tried to go from first to third on the hit and was gunned down by a Flaherty to Tison to Schrock relay. Still 1-0 Warhawks after 3 innings. The Warhawks went down again in the 4th, with only the benefit of a Jacquez single. Ted Williams kept the Cavaliers at bay by striking out the number 5 hitter (Dunn) after a 1 out walk. 1st baseman David Fathalikhani led off the Warhawk 5th with a single. Pinch runner Joe Maloney (who had earlier stolen 2nd as a courtesy runner for Jacquez) was thrown out at 2nd this time on a “strike em out, throw em out double play. In the bottom of the 5th, Williams retired the lead off batter, but then surrendered consecutive singles. Senior righty Jesse Jeter came in to replace Williams, who had pitched well, but was tiring on the cold evening. Jeter came in to get a strikeout, and after throwing wild to first on a slow roller, then got a strikeout to leave the bases loaded. In the top of the 6th, Senior right fielder Collin Flaherty hit a long blast to left, staking the Warhawks to a 2-0 advantage. Jeter went through the Cavs in the 6th like a hot knife through butter, striking out the side in order. Madison got a lead off infield hit by Schrock in the 7th and a good SAC bunt by Matt Zepp, but couldn’t push another run across. The wheels fell off for the Warhawks in the bottom of the 7th. The lead off man reached on an infield error and third baseman Wyatt Moore reached on a bloop single. Jeter loaded the bases after hitting pinch hitter Colin Dempsy with a 3-2 fastball. Closer Andrew Schrock came in to an extremely difficult situation and induced a groundball that the Warhawks were unable to handle, plating the first 2 runs of the game for the Cavs. After a beautifully executed pick off play, a walk and a walk-off single by VMI-bound Jacob Morely ended the game, with the Cavs getting the 3-2 come back victory. ^Warhawks Charges Pass McLean
The Madison Warhawks came back from an early 3-0 deficit to turn back the McLean Highlanders 7-4 in Liberty District play at Madison High School. Senior Jesse Jeter was the winning pitcher and also homered and had 2 RBIs for the Warhawks. The big offensive blow for the Warhawks came from Senior center fielder Kyle McIntyre who hit a bases loaded double to drive in 3 runs and put the Warhawks ahead to stay in the 2nd inning. In the top of the first, the Warhawks got into immediate trouble by loading the bases with no one out on a hit batsman, and infield error, and a bloop single. McLean then took a 3-0 advantage after a single by catcher Denis Buckley and a double by first baseman Erik Payne. Jeter then got a strikeout and third baseman Andrew Schrock backhanded a groundball and threw to Alex Jacquez for a tag play at the plate for the 2nd out. The top of the 1st ended on a force play at 2nd. The Warhawks came out determined to put an immediate dent in the deficit. Kyle McIntyre walked and 2nd baseman Casey Turner singled sharply to right. However, McLean Sophomore righty Sean Fitzgerald was able to induce 3 straight groundballs to work out of the inning with no runs crossing the plate for the Warhawks. Jeter set the Highlanders down in order in the 2nd inning with one out coming on a strikeout and one coming on a great scoop at first by first baseman David Fathalikhani on a low throw after a ground ball. In the bottom of the 2nd, Andrew Schrock started with an excellent at bat, battling with 2 strikes and eventually stroking a line single to right. Junior DH Ricardo Perez then lofted a fly ball to the left center gap that just fell out of the glove of Highlander centerfielder Riley Beiro for a double. David Fathalikhani walked to load the bases and then Jesse Jeter helped his own cause by singling to center, driving in Schrock and leaving the bases loaded. Kyle McIntyre then jumped on a first pitch fastball and laced a bases clearing double to right center, putting the Warhawks ahead 4-3. Casey Turner then moved McIntyre to third with a long fly to center, where he stayed until being driven in by a SAC fly to right by Brig Tison. Jeter set the Highlanders down in order in the 3rd. The Warhawks did not score in the third, but Ricardo Perez got his 2nd hit of the game by singling down the left field line. McLean loaded the bases with one out in the 4th on 2 walks and a single. The Warhawks got the 2nd out of the inning on a seldom seen catcher to pitcher force play at home plate. In this instance, Jeter’s 1 ball 2 strike pitch to Riley Beiro was dribbled in front of the plate and both catcher Alex Jacquez and Jeter approached the ball. When Jeter saw Jacquez continuing to go for the ball, he alertly continued with his momentum to home plate, where he completed the force play when Jacquez flipped him the ball. The inning ended with the bases loaded on a grounder that Tison charged and flipped to Turner at second. Madison scored an insurance run in the 4th when Jeter walked and was moved to 2nd on a perfect SAC bunt up the 1st base line by K-Mac. Casey Turner then moved courtesy runner Joe Maloney to third with a groundball. Maloney, who was getting good secondary leads off of third, alertly scored on a close play at home after a wild pitch. At the end of 4 innings, it was 6-3 Warhawks. Jeter set down McLean in order in the 5th and 6th and the Warhawks failed to score in the 5th. In the bottom of the 6th, Jeter blasted a homerun to right center to put Madison ahead 7-3. In the top of the 7th, Jeter was able to retire the first batter, but then surrendered 2 walks. With runners on 1st and third and 1 out, he left to a well deserved ovation, after pitching 6 1/3 innings, giving up 4 hits, 4 strikeouts and ultimately 3 earned runs, as well as going 2 for 2 with a homer, 2 RBIs and a walk at the plate. Andrew Schrock came in to get his 4th save in 5 Warhawk victories, by inducing a grounder back to the mound and finishing the game with a knee buckling called third strike curveball. Coach Gjormand was pleased after the game that the team was able to respond to some adversity from a prior game and from a tough first inning. “We knew McLean would come in ready to play and they did. Coach Thomas always has his team ready to go and they were very aggressive. Jesse did a nice job and I was happy with our approach at the plate tonight. We really started to get the bat head out on the ball.” The Warhawks travel to Liberty District foe W.T. Woodson on Friday night. ^Warhawks Fall to Cougars
The Madison Warhawks were defeated 12-3 by the Oakton Cougars in the annual non-district rivalry game played at Madison’s field. The Cougars strung together hits in two big innings (4 in the 3rd and 5 in the 7th) to hand the Warhawks their second loss of the young season. Senior lefty Ted Williams (2-1) started on the mound for the Warhawks and surrendered a 2 strike single over short by Cougar catcher Keith Werman. Werman moved the third on a nubber hit by Connor Madden that resulted in a disputed out call at first base. Kevin Wager then hit a 2 strike liner to Casey Turner for the 2nd out and Williams stranded Werman at third by striking out Alfredo Rodriguez looking. Cougar Senior lefty Brett Williams took care of the Warhawks in order in the last half of the first inning. Brett Williams then started the Cougar 2nd inning by doubling to right. Williams was moved to third on a SAC bunt and came home on a RBI single by Adam Henne. The Warhawks again went down in order in the second and the Cougars led 1-0 after 2 innings. The first 3 Cougars batters of the 3rd inning all reached on infield singles, the last being a perfectly pushed bunt by Wager. Four runs then scored on a single by Rodriguez, a SAC fly by Williams, and a 2 RBI single by Bobby McCormick. The Warhawks were again retired in order and the Cougars led 5-0 after 3 innings. Werman started the Cougar 4th with a one out walk and stole second. He came home on an RBI single by Wager. The Warhawk bats finally got going in the 4th, led by a lead off single and stolen base by center fielder Kyle McIntyre. McIntyre came home on an RBI single by Brig Tison. With two outs Collin Flaherty was hit by a pitch and third baseman Andrew Schrock hit a shot to left center to score Tison. Cougar center fielder Luke Willis cut the ball off in the gap and quickly unloaded it to Rodriguez, who zipped a perfect one-hopper to Werman to just nip the sliding Flaherty at the plate. The Cougars led 6-2 after 4 innings. Senior righty Maxfield Brennan took over for Ted Williams in the 5th inning and was able to set the Cougars down, surrendering only a 1 out single to Cougar 2nd baseman Adam Henne. Brett Williams finished his day on the mound for the Cougars by setting down the Warhawks in order in the 5th. The Cougars scored an unearned run in the 6th on 2 successive Warhawk infield errors, a walk, and a hit batsman. The Warhawks countered against reliever Bart Reese with a brief rally in the bottom of the 6th, when McIntyre singled sharply to right and hustled to second when the ball got away from the right fielder. Casey Turner moved the runner to third on a groundout and McIntyre scored on an RBI groundout by Tison. After 6 innings, the Cougars led 7-3. The Cougars put the game away in the 7th by scoring 5 more times on 5 hits, a walk, and another hit batsman. The Warhawks went down in order in the 7th. Final score: Cougars 12 Warhawks 3. Warhawk Head Coach Mark Gjormand summarized by saying, “It wasn’t our day. They are a very good team and we did not play very well. We need to stay focused and get after it next week.” ^Warhawks Defeat Statesmen 5-2
The Madison Warhawks used the long ball and the strong arm of Senior right-hander Jesse Jeter to defeat the cross-town Marshall Statesmen at the cold and windy Marshall High School. Seniors Andrew Schrock (who also picked up his third save) and Kyle McIntyre both homered in the 2nd inning to give the Warhawks the 3-0 advantage. Jeter made that lead stand by pitching 6 strong innings, giving up no earned runs, 2 hits, 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. The Warhawks threatened against Marshall Senior lefty Justin Britt in the top of the first. 2nd baseman Casey Turner worked a one out walk and moved to 2nd on a groundout by Brig Tison. Turner stole third and Collin Flaherty walked. The runners were left on first and third after a soft liner to second. Jeter took command immediately and struck out the first 2 Marshall hitters. Jeter then induced Junior 3-hole hitter Bryan Whittington to pop out to 2nd. The Warhawks took the lead in the top of the 2nd when Senior third baseman Andrew Schrock deposited a Britt fastball over the right-centerfield fence. Junior DH Ricardo Perez then hit a solid single to right. With 2 outs, lead-off hitter McIntyre popped a long fly ball to center that left the yard for a 2 run homer that put Madison ahead 3-0. Jeter survived a single and an errant pickoff attempt by stranding Junior Tom Pacheco at third when he induced a slow groundball which shortstop Brig Tison charged and gunned to first for the third out. Madison scored another run in the third on a single by Junior catcher Alex Jacquez and a run scoring double by Schrock. Jeter set down the Statesmen in order in the third. Madison had 3 hits in the top of the 4th (Matt Zepp double to right center, Kyle McIntyre bunt single, and Brig Tison single), but failed to score as one runner was picked off and another was thrown out at the plate on a ground ball. Marshall scored a run in the bottom of the 4th. Leadoff batter Andy Schroth reached on an infield error, moved to 2nd on a passed ball and went to third on a SAC bunt. After a hit batsman, Schroth scored on a RBI single to left by Pacheco. Jeter evaded further damage by taking things in his own hands and striking out the last two batters. Madison put another run on the board in the 5th when Andrew Schrock drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a Ricardo Perez RBI single. Jeter struck out the first Marshall batter of the 5th and the ensuing base on balls was erased by a nifty Tison to Turner to Fathalikhani 6-4-3 double play. Madison threatened in the 6th against reliever Daniel Medric, but stranded one-out runners on 2nd and 3rd (McIntyre by walk, Tison by single). Jeter struck out two in the 6th, the last one with the bases loaded after walking one batter and hitting two. Madison got nothing going in the 7th, but for a David Fathalikhani single and went to the bottom of the 7th leading 5-1. Junior Gavin Hilburn took the hill for the Warhawks and retired 2 out of the first 3 batters. Three consecutive 2 strike hits by Marshall loaded the bases with the score at 5-2. Senior Andrew Schrock came on to earn the save, zipping 3 straight fastballs by the final Marshall hitter. After the game, Coach Gjormand indicated that the team played better in certain aspects of the game than others, but was pleased with the first district win. “Our pitching and defense was good. Jesse had good velocity and Andrew came in at the end and got after it. Our at bats were inconsistent, but we got some timely hitting. We’re looking forward to the second half of rivalry weekend tomorrow.” ^Warhawks Comeback Falls Short in Tournament Final
The Madison Warhawks squared off against the undefeated (15-0) American Heritage Stallions on Friday night at Tinker Field in the finals of the 2008 Orlando National Baseball Classic. The Warhawks fell behind early and were unable to complete its comeback and fell 6-3. Senior right-hander Jesse Jeter started for the Warhawks and went right after the Stallions’ talented line up. A hit, an errant pick off attempt, a strikeout, a groundout, and a hit by pitch gave the Stallions runners on first and third and two outs. A Warhawk miscue extended the inning and allowed the first run of the game to score. Stallion third baseman Jeramy Matos then launched a long triple to centerfield to score two runs, and then he scored on a single. At the end of the first, the Stallions had scored 4 runs. The Warhawks got 2 runners on base in the bottom of the first against Stallions Senior lefty TJ Thornton, but were unable to push anything across. American Heritage kept the pressure on the Warhawks in the top of the 2nd, scoring a run on the 2nd single of the game by leadoff batter JD DelValle and an RBI double by catcher Mike Russo. TJ Thornton set the Warhawks down in order in the bottom of the 2nd. It was 5-0 Stallions after two innings. Jeter set down the Stallions in the 3rd on two grounders and a strikeout. The Warhawks got something going in the third, when with one out, Kyle McIntyre walked and Casey Turner beat out an infield hit. With two outs, Senior right fielder Collin Flaherty hit a hooking line drive to left that went off the glove of the diving Del Valle for a 2 RBI double. At the end of 3 innings, the Warhawks trailed 5-2. Both teams were set down uneventfully in the 4th, but the Stallions added a run in the 5th after a leadoff triple just eluded the glove of the diving Kyle McIntyre in right center and an RBI single by Jeramy Matos. Jesse Jeter finished his night on the mound after 5 innings having battled a difficult lineup, responsible for only 2 earned runs on 7 hits with 7 strikeouts. The Warhawks went down in order in the 5th and 6th innings against reliever Brandon Nieves. Senior Andrew Schrock came in from third base to pitch the 6th and the 7th for the Warhawks and battled to keep the Stallions off the scoreboard and keep the Warhawks within striking distance at 6-2 going into the bottom of the 7th. The Warhawks put the first two runners on base when Junior DH Ricardo Perez was hit by a pitch and Senior first baseman David Fathalikhani singled to deep short. With one out, Kyle McIntyre hit a slow roller to the third base side of the mound and took off toward first base. The pitcher’s throw to first was up the line and forced Stallion first baseman Josh Josephson into the path of McIntyre. In a “bang bang” play, Josephson was unable to sustain the catch of the ball for more than a split second before the collision with McIntyre jarred the ball loose. Pinch runner Joe Maloney scored all the way from second and pinch runner Brian Minnick hustled to third from first. It appeared as if the Warhawks had cut the deficit to 6-3 and had runners on first and third, one out, and the tying run coming to the plate. However, the 3 umpire crew huddled and ultimately ruled McIntyre out at first base, resulting in the 2nd out. A fly ball to right field ended the Warhawks attempt at a come back. “Obviously, we would like to have come out on the winning end tonight,” said Madison Coach Mark Gjormand. “This was a tough team and we just didn’t put enough pressure on them. However, one of our goals was to come down here and get better and we certainly did that. We are excited to go home and start the season.” ^Warhawks Battle Back Late to Overtake S. County
Another big game at historic Tinker Field. Another thrilling Warhawks victory, this time battling back from behind on two occasions, downing the talented South County Stallions 20-7. Trailing 7-5 entering the top of the 6th, the Warhawks put 15 runs on the board in the last 2 innings. The hitting was consistently torrid throughout the line up: to name a few examples; Senior 2nd sacker Casey Tuner (2 for 4, 2 RBI), Senior shortstop Brig Tison (4 for 5), Junior catcher Alex Jacquez (3 for 4, including another double), Senior third baseman Andrew Schrock (2 for 5, triple, 2 RBI), Junior DH Ricardo Perez (2 for 4, triple, 3 RBI), and Senior leftfielder Matt Zepp (3 for 5, double, MONSTER HOMER, 3 RBI). Senior southpaw Ted Williams picked up his 2nd win in as many days, relieving Junior Gavin Hilburn, who pitched very well in his first varsity start. Williams gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits and 1 walk in 4 innings, while fanning four. The visiting Warhawks were unable to generate any runs in the 1st inning for the first time in the young season. Brig Tison collected one of his four hits of the night, but was stranded at first base. Junior Gavin Hilburn toed the rubber for the Warhawks and struck out the first batter he faced. A hit batsman was to be the only base runner of the inning for the Stallions. Alex Jacquez led off the 2nd for the Warhawks with another hard base hit to right center. Andrew Schrock followed with a single up the middle and Ricardo Perez moved the runners into scoring position by hitting a groundball to the right side. Senior David Fathalikhani put the Warhawks ahead 1-0 with Sac fly to right field. Hillburn retired the Stallions in order in the bottom of the 2nd, 2 by strikeout. Madison looked to have something going in the third when Senior Kyle McIntyre led off with a walk. McIntyre was erased on a double play when Casey Turner lined to shortstop on a hit and run and McIntyre was easily doubled off of first. Brig Tison lined another single, but was stranded at first. South County erupted for 5 runs in the bottom of the third, after some hits and a few Warhawk miscues. Madison immediately battled back in the top of the 4th. Alex Jacquez hit another line single to right and kept right going to 2nd when the ball was misplayed. With one out, DH Ricardo Perez hit a long triple to center, scoring courtesy runner TJ Ehrsam. Fathalikhani walked and he and Perez pulled a first and third double steal to make the score 5-3. With 2 outs, Casey Turner doubled to right center, plating Fathalikhani and McIntyre to tie the score at 5. Senior lefty Ted Williams went to the mound in the bottom of the 4th. Stallion catcher Justin Haas worked a leadoff walk. After a flyout to center, leadoff batter Kyle Michaels struck out, but in the process Haas moved to third from first on a wild pitch. With two outs, Sean Adams dropped a single into left field scoring Haas and putting the Stallions back in front 6-5. Williams averted further damage by striking out Stallion pitcher Peyton Bartlett. Madison went down with no hits in the top of the 5th and the Stallions scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 5th to take a 7-5 lead. The Warhawks came out determined in the top of the 6th and David Fathalikhani got things going with a walk. Matt Zepp then belted a sharp single to left. Kyle McIntyre then had what may go into Warhawk history as THE At Bat. “K-Mac” battled and fouled off 6 straight pitches with two strikes and worked a base on balls to load the bases. The At Bat took some energy out of South County and ignited both the Madison dugout and the entire Warhawk Nation. Two straight wild pitches resulted in the clearing of the bases and a sudden 8-7 Warhawk lead. Casey Turner then hit a hard hopper that the 2nd baseman couldn’t handle. Brig Tison hammered his third single of the game. Alex Jacquez was hit by a pitch. Tison scored on a wild pitch. Andrew Schrock then blasted a long triple to center, driving in Jacquez and Collin Flaherty to put the Warhawks ahead 11-7. Schrock was driven in by a Ricardo Perez Sac fly to center. Batting in the inning for the 2nd time, David Fathalikhani singled sharply to center. Senior Matt Zepp then hit the first pitch he saw and crushed a long homer to left. When the Warhawk half of the 6th ended, they had scored 9 runs and led 14-7. Williams returned to the mound for the Warhawks in the bottom of the 6th and handled the Stallions on 6 pitches, two of the outs coming on Andrew Schrock plays on ground balls to third. Madison kept the pressure on the Stallions in the 7th, scoring 5 more runs. Turner led off with a single. Tison stroked his 4th single of the game. Senior Collin Flaherty singled to left to drive in a run. Alex Jacquez doubled to drive in a run, Ricardo Perez singled to right to drive in another run. Following another run scoring on an error, Zepp doubled to drive in a run. Madison led 20-7 and Williams retired the Stallions in the 7th, allowing one single. Coach Gjormand said after the game that he was very proud of the team, in that they played well early, withstood the adversity of being behind, and showed great leadership in being able to come back against such a tough team that is a great Northern Virginia baseball program. Gjormand said, “I really don’t want to leave anybody out because so many guys did so many things well on so many levels. Gavin looked very good in his first varsity start. Teddy really battled and competed on the mound for the second night in a row. Matt Zepp came through for us in such a big way. We are looking forward to playing a great undefeated team on Friday.” Madison will play in the championship game of the Orlando National Baseball Classic for the 2nd year in a row against American Heritage (Florida) on Friday, March 21st at 7:00 pm at Tinker Field. In the other semi-final, American Heritage defeated last year’s champion, Olympia HS of Orlando, 8-4. ^Warhawks Survive Final Rally and Win 13-11
The Madison Warhawks soared to a quick 10-0 lead after 3 innings and then held on for dear life after a furious David Lipscomb (Nashville, Tennessee) rally and prevailed 13-11. Senior lefthander Ted Williams earned the victory for the Warhawks, hurling 3 scoreless innings, surrendering only 2 hits, while striking out 6 consecutive Mustang batters. For the second game in a row, Junior catcher Alex Jacquez led the Warhawk bats, collecting 3 hits (1 double) and 3 RBI. Senior shortstop Brig Tison was 3 for 3 and Senior second baseman Casey Turner was 1 for 1, collected 2 walks and added 2 RBI. In the top of the 1st, Senior centerfielder Kyle McIntyre greeted David Lipscomb pitcher Ryan Emery’s initial offering with a line single up the middle. Walks to Casey Turner and Brig Tison loaded the bases. With one out, Alex Jacqez hit a hot grounder to the shortstop that he was unable to handle and two runs scored. After a half an inning the Warhawks led 2-0. Ted Williams came out challenging the Lipscomb hitters retiring the side on 10 pitches, including a single and a strikeout. Madison batted around in the top of the 2nd, scoring 6 runs and taking a commanding 8-0 lead. Junior Ricardo Perez continued his hot hitting by singling to center and hustling to second after the ball was misplayed. With one out, Matt Zepp doubled to left, driving in Perez from third. With two outs, Zepp moved to third on a passed ball and Turner worked a walk and stole second. Zepp and Turner were brought home on a hard single to center by Brig Tison. Collin Flaherty worked a walk and Alex Jacquez brought Flaherty home with a double to left. Senior third baseman Andrew Schrock ended the 2nd inning barrage by singling sharply through the middle, bringing home Flaherty. Ted Williams kept the pressure on the Lipscomb hitters by striking out all 3 batters he faced in the bottom of the 2nd on only 11 pitches. Madison scored 2 more times in the top of the 3rd on a lead off single from Senior first baseman David Fathalikhani; a 1 out walk to Kyle McIntyre; a 2 RBI single by Casey Turner; and another single by Brig Tison. Williams finished his day on the mound for Madison in the bottom of the third by striking out the first 2 batters of the inning, giving up a single to center, and ending the inning with Matt Zepp making a running catch in left. David Lipscomb kept battling and got themselves back in the ballgame in the 4th and 5th innings. Senior Gavin Scott took the hill for the Warhawks in the 4th and retired 2 of the first 3 batters he faced. A combination of some hits, a few Madison miscues, and some free passes proved costly, allowing Lipscomb to close the gap to 10-2 after 4 innings and 10-9 after 5 innings. Senior Matt Zepp came on in relief in the middle of the bottom of the 5th and was able to induce a pop up to first baseman Matt Moore with the tying run on 2nd. However, some damage had been inflicted and the Warhawks once commanding lead was down to 10-9. Madison tried to regain some momentum in the 6th with Jacquez and Perez both singling, but they were unable to get any insurance runs. Senior Andrew Schrock took the hill in the 6th for the Warhawks, looking for his second save in as many days. Schrock set down the Mustangs in the 6th, allowing only one base runner on a walk. The Warhawks scored 3 huge insurance runs in the top of the 7th. Kyle McIntyre led things off with a walk and was sacrificed to 2nd by a Turner bunt. Brig Tison then singled to left with McIntyre moving to third. Collin Flaherty then pushed a perfectly placed bunt past the pitcher for a hit, scoring McIntyre and moving Tison to second. Tison then scored all the way from second on a great hustle play after a wild pitch. Alex Jacquez then did the final damage for Madison by driving in Flaherty with a single to left. The Warhawks survived some tense moments in the bottom of the 7th. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Mustangs scored a run on a soft infield hit and another run on a swinging third strike that hit the front of the plate and popped all the way to the backstop. Schrock ended the marathon game by pumping a 2-2 fastball passed right fielder Clark Tomberlin. Following the game, Coach Gjormand indicated that he was excited to get off to a 2-0 start to the season. “It was great to get an early lead and give a lot of players an opportunity. Then we closed it out. Teddy was outstanding today. He challenged hitters and kept his pitch count down. I feel good about the way our pitching is set up with Teddy and Jesse.” Gjormand continued, “ We looked good at the bat and good on the bases. We came down here to win and to get better.” The Warhawks will play in the tournament semi-final on Wednesday night at Tinker Field against the winner of the South County/Lake Highland Prep game. ^Warhawks Fly Past Salisbury School 10 – 7
The Madison Warhawks started the 2008 season on a beautiful sunny Florida day by defeating the Salisbury Crimson Knights, from Salisbury, Connecticut 10-7. Senior righthander Jesse Jeter started on the mound for the Warhawks and began the season right where he left off last spring by striking out the first two batters and getting Salisbury’s number three hitter to tap weakly back to the box for the third out. Clemson-bound senior lefty Chris Dwyer was on the hill for Salisbury and the Warhawks battled and battled in the bottom of the first, extending Dwyer to 35 pitches and scoring 2 big runs. With one out, 2nd baseman Casey Turner worked Dwyer for a walk. After Turner stole second, Brig Tison also worked out a walk on a full count. After fouling off 3 tough 2 strike pitches, Junior catcher Alex Jaquez hit a bullet over the centerfielder’s head for a 2 run double. Jeter worked another 3 up – 3 down inning in the top of the second, 2 more by strikeouts, including Vanderbilt signee Anthony Hewitt, who would put some “hurt” on the Warhawks in the later innings. The Warhawks went down in order in the bottom of the 2nd. Junior DH Ricardo Perez lined out to third, Senior first baseman David Fathalkhani flied out to center, and Senior leftfielder Matt Zepp fouled out to the first baseman. Shortstop Brooks Townshend started the Salisbury third inning with a single to left. Jeter proceeded to pick Townshend off of first and then finished the rest of the inning with another strikeout and a lazy flyball to Collin Flaherty in rightfield. The Warhawks went down in order in their half of the third, but had battled enough to end Dwyer’s early season outing after 57 pitches. In the top of the 4th, Jeter got the first 2 batters on a flyball to Centerfielder Kyle McIntyre and another strikeout. With two outs, Dwyer singled sharply to right and Hewitt hit a long triple to the base of the left centerfield wall, scoring Dwyer. With the tying run on third, Jeter finished his work for the day by zipping a fastball past first baseman Shawn White. The Warhawks didn’t give Salisbury much time to gather momentum, scoring five runs off of reliever Anthony Hewitt, who had started the 4th inning on the mound after moving in from shortstop. Collin Flaherty was hit by a pitch, Alex Jaquez ripped another line drive double to right, and Senior Third Baseman Andrew Schrock drew a walk. Ricardo Perez then lofted Hewitt’s first offering deep down the rightfield line for a bases clearing triple. After a walk to David Fathalkhani, Matt Zepp put down a beautiful Sac bunt to score Perez and move Fathalkhani to second. Following a wild pitch that moved Fathalkhani to third, Kyle McIntyre dragged a perfectly placed bunt down the first base line, beating the tag and scoring Fathalkhani. Two groundouts ended Madison’s half of the 4th. Senior righty Maxfield Brennan took the hill for the Warhawks in the 5th. After giving up a leadoff single, Brennan induced a soft fly to right for the first out. Freshman Mike White followed with a full count walk and Nick DeSantis grounded a single to left to narrow Madison’s lead to 7-2. Brennan then got the next 2 hitters on a fly ball to left center tracked down by Zepp and an easy pop up to Turner. The Warhawks went nothing across in the bottom of the 5th. Salisbury made things interesting in the top of the sixth, scoring 2 runs on 3 singles sandwiched around a monster homerun to left by Hewitt. Senior closer Andrew Schrock came to the mound with a 7-4 lead and men on first and second with only one out. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, Schrock poured a fastball passed White and got DeSantis to tap back to the mound. Madison roared back in the bottom of the 6th. After consecutive singles by Fathalkhani and Zepp, Casey Turner blasted a triple down the leftfield line to score two runs to make the score 9-4. Turner then ended the scoring for Madison by scoring on a wild pitch. Senior lefty Brian Foy took the mound for the Warhawks in the 7th. Foy ran into some hard luck when leadoff hitter Alex LiDunni squirted a slow grounder towards first that took a bad hop and rolled into right for a single. Foy then struck out pinch hitter Scott Zender. The middle of the Salisbury order, including Dwyer and Hewitt then collected 3 straight hits to make the score 10-7. Schrock then went back to the mound and got 2 groundball outs to earn the save. The Warhawks were led by the pitching of Jesse Jeter, as well as the timely hitting of Alex Jaquez, Ricardo Perez, and Casey Turner. Jeter pitched 4 innings, surrendering only 1 earned run on 3 hits. Jeter struck out seven and did not issue any walks. Jacquez stroked 2 doubles and 2 RBI, while Perez drove in three with a triple. Turner drove in 2 with his triple, scored 2 runs and stole 2 bases. After the game, Coach Gjormand was pleased that the team had gotten off to a good start against a tough first round opponent. “We had some great at bats early, fighting off several 2 strike pitches and building the pitch count. I was proud of our effort and our timely hitting. Jesse looked real good today and we are looking forward to tomorrow.” ^ |
